Elementary teachers play a vital role in the development and growth of their students. The experiences students have in the years of Kindergarten through fifth grade ultimately shape the way they feel about themselves socially and academically, and can determine the path they take through the world. Elementary school teachers must give the students proper grounding in subjects ranging from math and science to social studies and reading. An elementary education is a base upon which students build in middle and secondary schools, so a good teacher will instill and cultivate good study skills as well as provide interesting and interactive activities to captivate children with characteristically curious and short attention spans.

In most elementary schools, one teacher will instruct a class of students in a full range of subjects, meaning they must have an understanding of mathematics, social studies, geography, reading and writing, and art. Increasingly, teachers are dealing with multi-level classes in a variety of subjects or are specializing in one subject, teaching multiple classes of students. A teacher must have a bachelors degree in a related field, as well as a teaching certification license from the state he or she desires to work in. Median annual wages of elementary school teachers ranged from $47,100 to $51,180 in May 2008.
