State Teaching Job Initiatives
The District of Columbia Public Schools (DCPS) maintain TeachDC.org, which offers a comprehensive overview of the DC public school system. In addition to general information, TeachDC.org also provides information on how to become a teacher in DC, as well as a list of current teaching vacancies. DCPS is currently implementing extensive reforms, and expects to have new teaching positions continually become available.
Salary & Incentives
DCPS follows a salary schedule for DC teaching jobs, where compensation ranges from $42,370 for a first-year teacher with a bachelor’s degree to $87,583 for teachers with over 21 years of teaching experience and either a doctorate degree or a master’s degree plus 60 college credit hours. Compensation for teaching jobs in DC increase each year up to 21 years, and with each degree qualification.
Degree qualifications are a bachelor’s degree, a bachelor’s degree with 15 credits, a bachelor’s degree with 30 credits or a master’s degree, a master’s degree with 30 credits, and a master’s degree with 60 credits or a doctorate degree. DCPS also offers a variety of additional compensation opportunities. Instructors working in DCPS programs on Saturdays or after school are paid $30 per hour, and teachers who also work as a coach or activity leader receive up to an additional $3,000 annually.
Teachers who obtain a second certification in a high-need subject area receive a $1,500 bonus. Each year, DCPS offers up to $1,800 in tuition reimbursement for teachers who take graduate-level classes related to their subject areas.
Professional Development
Professional Development is one of the main components of the DCPS Teaching and Learning Framework. DCPS employs 150 instructional coaches for job-embedded professional development, and also offers mentoring for new teachers. Training modules and workshops are available to teachers at all levels, as well as tuition reimbursement for graduate-level classes in relevant subject areas.
Benefits & Retirement
DCPS education jobs come with health insurance, dental and optical insurance, basic life insurance, a teacher retirement plan, and a variety of additional benefits. In general, DCPS teachers are eligible to retire at the age of 62, at the age of 60 with 20 years of service, at the age of 55 with 30 years of service if they were hired before November 1st, 1996, and at any age with 30 years of service if they were hired after November 1st, 1996.
