State Teaching Job Initiatives

The South Carolina Center for Educator Recruitment, Retention, and Advancement (CERRA) handles all issues related to South Carolina teaching jobs. CERRA updates its job bank of teaching vacancies daily, and allows prospective teachers to submit an online application to school districts and teaching recruiters. The job bank provides individuals with a search tool for browsing teaching jobs in South Carolina by district, region, and specialty. CERRA also publishes information on job fairs, as well as its annual South Carolina Teacher Expo. CERRA recruits current high school and college students for South Carolina teaching positions through a variety of tuition assistance programs, including its Teacher Cadet Program and Teaching Fellows Program.

Salary & Incentives

In 2007, South Carolina ranked 33rd in the nation with an average teacher salary of $44,335; however, that number has since climbed to an average of $47,421, with a median of $46,850. South Carolina follows a salary schedule with salary increases each year up to 22 years of experience, and with each teacher class. The five teacher classes are determined by college experience; Class 1 is a Master’s Degree, Class 2 is Bachelor’s Degree and 18 credit hours, Class 3 is a Bachelor’s Degree, Class 7 is a Master’s Degree and 30 credit hours, and Class 8 is a Doctorate Degree. Teacher salaries in South Carolina range from $32,546 for a first-year Class 3 Teacher (Bachelor’s Degree), to $71,550 for a Class 8 teacher with 22+ years of full-time teaching experience. Teacher salaries also vary by district, ranging from an average of $36,433 at South Carolina Public Charter Schools, to $51,345 for the Lexington 5 School District. South Carolina public schools offer additional pay for leading extracurricular activities.

Professional Development

CERRA administers the Teacher Cadet, Teaching Fellow, and ProTeam Programs for mentoring and recruiting new teachers. The newly created Call Me MISTER program run through Clemson University also helps recruit and mentor new teachers in South Carolina. Additional professional development programs vary by district.

Benefits & Retirement

Teachers in South Carolina may opt into the Teacher and Employee Retention Incentive (TERI) program, which allows teachers eligible for retirement to begin collecting deferred retirement benefits without terminating employment. All retirement benefits for South Carolina teachers are handled by the South Carolina Retirement Systems. Average final compensation is calculated by dividing an individual’s 12 highest consecutive quarters of compensation by 3. Teachers at the age of 65 with at least 5 years of experience, or at any age with at least 28 years of experience are eligible for full benefits. Teachers at the age of 60 with at least 5 years of experience, and teachers at the age of 55 with at least 25 years of experience are eligible for reduced benefits.
