State Teaching Job Initiatives
As a “local control” state, Rhode Island has no state-wide job bank for teaching jobs. Instead, all hiring for Rhode Island teaching jobs is done on the local level by one of its 36 school districts. The Rhode Island Education Exchange and the Rhode Island Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (RIDE) both provide online directories of websites and contacts for school districts, as well as for individual schools. In November, 2009, RIDE determined that the following subjects currently suffer from teacher shortages: Bilingual Spanish (Pre-K – 12), Chemistry (7-12), Early Childhood (Pre-K – 2), English as a Second Language, General Science (7-12), History (7-12), Home Economics, Mathematics (7-12), Physics (7-12), and School Nursing.
Salary & Incentives
Rhode Island ranked 5th in the nation in 2007 with an average teacher salary of $58,420. Rhode Island school districts follow teacher salary schedules that increase teacher pay each year up to 11 years. During the 2008-2009 school year, salaries for Rhode Island teaching jobs ranged from $35,179 for first-year teachers in Ponaganset, to $73,230 for teachers in Coventry with at least 11 years of experience. In recent years, RIDE has conducted studies which have concluded that Rhode Island compares well with both its neighbors Connecticut and Massachusetts in education spending.
Professional Development
RIDE offers a variety of professional development opportunities for teachers in Rhode Island. The RIDE website includes an online searchable database of professional development workshops, courses, and other events.
Benefits & Retirement
Public school teachers in Rhode Island who are certified by the Board of Regents, teach as their principal occupation, and are regularly employed on at least a half-time basis by Rhode Island public schools are eligible for non-retirement benefits administered by the Employees’ Retirement System of Rhode Island (ESRI). Public school teachers with 28 years of experience, or 10 years of experience at age 60 or older are eligible for schedule A retirement benefits, while teachers with 29 years of experience at age 59, or 10 years of experience at 65 are eligible for schedule B retirement benefits. Schedule A benefits are 0.1%, 0.1%, 1%, and 5% more favorable than schedule B benefits for the first 10, 20, 34, and any additional years of retirement, respectively.
