State Teaching Job Initiatives

New York recently created an online application system for educators that serves over 170 school districts. New York State Public Schools also post state teaching positions online at TEACHNY, NYEDJOBS, and NY Education Jobs. Within New York City, Mayor Bloomberg recently started the NYC New Schools Initiative, which lists job openings and teaching vacancies at schools recently created as part of educational reform in New York City. Since 2002, the NYC New Schools Initiative has offered job openings at over 300 new schools. New York State also has a Troops-to-Teachers branch, an organization aimed at helping former members of the armed forces secure New York teaching jobs. New York also offers special programs for new teachers, and recognizes great teachers through awards.

Salary & Incentives

New York ranks 3rd among states with an average teacher salary of $55,181, and 4th among states with an average starting teacher salary of $36,400. New York is one of 22 states where increases in average teacher salary have matched inflation. New York State schools offer competitive compensation for teachers. New York City rewards teachers through salary steps and differentials. Salary steps increase teacher salary up to twice a year, based on certain qualifications. Salary differentials are offered based on teachers’ education levels.

Professional Development

New York State professional development programs include a mentorship program for teachers, as well as the NYS Teacher Resource and Computer Training Centers. New York City offers in-service courses for teachers through the NYC After School Professional Development Program. Credits earned through this program can be counted towards both salary differentials and professional development requirements. Public school teachers in New York City with undergraduate degrees are eligible to apply for the Mayor’s Graduate Scholarship Program, which helps current teachers obtain graduate degrees at local universities. Programs are also available to paraprofessionals, including the Summer Stipend Program, through which paraprofessional educators may receive a stipend for completing college credit hours over the summer.

Benefits & Retirement

Benefits attached to education jobs vary in New York State. New York City provides full-time teachers with health insurance coverage. The HR Connect Leaves of Absence Office, and the Office of Occupational Safety and Health (OOSH) offer additional resources and benefits for teachers. Retirement is handled by the Teachers’ Retirement System, and the New York City Board of Education Retirement System.
