State Teaching Job Initiatives

The New Mexico Public Education Department (NMPED) collaborated with the University of New Mexico to create TeachNM.org, a website dedicated to the recruitment and retention of teachers in New Mexico. TeachNM.org includes resources for finding available New Mexico teaching jobs, as well as advice for individuals recently hired at teaching jobs in New Mexico. The National School Applications Network runs an online job placement service called the New Mexico School Applications Network (NMREAP), which was created through a partnership with several New Mexico school districts, but is not run by the New Mexico Department of Education. In addition to providing daily updates for listings of teaching vacancies, administrative positions, support services positions, and instructional support positions, NMREAP publishes information on job fairs for careers in education in New Mexico.

New Mexico ranked 40th in the nation for teacher pay in 2007 with an average salary of $42,780. Salaries for New Mexico teaching jobs increase depending on years of teaching experience and college degrees.

Professional Development

The Humanities Bureau of NMPED recently partnered with College Board to create a series of professional development opportunities for teachers in New Mexico, based off of AP preparation workshops and courses. Additional professional development events vary by school and by district.

Benefits & Retirement

The New Mexico Educational Retirement Board (NMERB) provides retirement benefits to teachers whose years of teaching service and age total 75 (for example, 60 years old with 15 years of teaching experience), teachers who are at least 65 years old with at least 5 years of teaching service, and all teachers with at least 25 years of teaching service. Specific benefits, which depend on years of service, are explained in detail in the NMERB Member Handbook.
