State Teaching Job Initiatives

The Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education partnered with SuccessLink.org to create a searchable online database of Missouri teaching jobs. Individuals in search of teaching jobs in Missouri are able to browse teaching vacancies by region and by specialty, and submit applications for them online. SuccessLink.org also provides resources and information for lesson and curriculum plans. Current teacher shortage areas for Missouri are Drivers Ed, Early Childhood, ESOL, Family Consumer Sciences, French, German, Latin, Spanish, Industrial Technologies, Mathematics, School Psychologist, Biology, Chemistry, Earth Sciences, Physics, Special Ed, Special Reading, Speech/Language, and Technology Ed.

Salary & Incentives

In 2007, Missouri ranked 46th in the nation for teacher pay with an average salary of $40,384. Missouri follows a salary schedule for teachers that increases pay according to years of teaching experience, and college degree level.

Professional Development

The Department of Elementary and Secondary Education’s Career Ladder divides Missouri teachers into 3 group: Stage 1, Stage 2, and Stage 3. Each stage of career ladder is associated with increased benefits and pay. Stage 1 involved 5 years of teaching experience in Missouri, performance on evaluations, and at least 9 hours of professional development through additional college credits. Stage 2 and 3 require increased teaching experience and professional development.

Benefits & Retirement

Missouri public school teachers are covered by the Public School and Education Employee Retirement Systems of Missouri (PSRS/PEERS). Under PSRS/PEERS, teachers are eligible for full retirement at the age of 60 with at least 5 years of teaching service, or at any age with at least 30 years of teaching service. Teachers with 25-29 years of teaching service are eligible for retirement with reduced benefits. Retirement compensation is determined by years of teaching experience and highest average salary.
