State Teaching Job Initiatives
The Michigan Government Website includes a Michigan Careers Page, which provides individuals in search of Michigan teaching jobs with online job banks, information regarding job fairs, and contact information for local school districts. The National School Applications Network runs a similar service called the Michigan School Applications Network (MIREAP), which was created through a partnership with several Michigan school districts, but is not run by the Michigan Department of Education.
Salary & Incentives
In 2007, Michigan ranked 9th in the nation for teacher pay with an average salary of $55,541. Compensation for teachers in Michigan has continued to rise, with the average base salary for Michigan teaching jobs in 2009 at $63,893, with an annual salary range of $40,528 – $64,106. Michigan follows a salary schedule for teachers that increases pay for years of teaching experience, and for college degree levels. The 2007 Michigan salary schedule ranged from $31,970 for first-year teachers with bachelor’s degrees, to nearly $70,000 for teachers with doctorate degrees, and over 12 years of teaching experience.
Professional Development
In 2003, the Michigan Department of Education and the Michigan Virtual University partnered to create Michigan LearnPort, a professional development portal for Michigan’s K-12 community. Michigan LearnPort currently offers hundreds of relevant courses, including nine courses that target the challenging concepts of the Michigan Merit Curriculum in the high-need areas math and science are offered several times a year. A comprehensive set of courses in the Biology, Chemistry and Physics Resource Series offers quick refreshers on topics tied to the Grade Level Content Expectations. More than 30 courses are available from the U.S. Department of Education Teacher-to-Teacher initiative, including “Monitoring Comprehension” and “Building Teacher Leaders” as well as “Beginning to Writing” and “Linear Equations.” The courses and the SB-CEUs are free. Some courses in Michigan LearnPort are fee-based. More than 100 six-week long, instructor facilitated courses cover a wide range of classroom topics as well as soft skills and personal enrichment topics. New courses are added on a regular basis.
Benefits & Retirement
Michigan public school teachers are eligible for retirement benefits administered by Michigan Office of Retirement Services at age 60 after with at least 10 years of teaching service, at age 60 with 5 consecutive years of teaching service directly before retirement, or at any age with at least 30 years of service. Reduced retirement benefits are also available for teachers who do not meet the eligibility requirements for standard benefits. Benefits are determined using years of creditable service and final average compensation.
