In 2007, Iowa ranked 38th in the nation for teacher pay with an average salary of $42,922. Compensation for Iowa teaching jobs has continued to rise, with the average annual base salary for teachers in 2009 at $45,664.  Iowa follows a salary schedule for teachers that increases pay according to years of teaching experience, and college degree level.

Teachers become vested into the state retirement program in either 4 years or by age 55. The average retirement age for teachers in Iowa is 62, with about 20 years of service.
