State Teaching Job Initiatives

The Florida Department of Education aims to standardize the districts throughout the state to increase student proficiency and earn the highest student achievement. The state maintains a website known as Teach in Florida that provides assistance to educators, potential educators, and school district staff. As Florida tries to reduce the number of children per class and more teachers retire, the state is looking for highly qualified teachers more than ever.

Salary & Incentives

In 2007, Florida ranked 24th in the nation for teacher pay with an average salary of $47,219.  Florida follows a salary schedule for teachers that increases pay according to years of teaching experience, and college degree level. For the 2008-2009 school-year, the starting salary for Florida teaching jobs was roughly $40,000 for individuals holding a bachelor’s degree, $45,000-$55,000 for individuals holding a master’s degree, and $45,000-$60,000 for individuals holding a specialist or doctorate degree. Professional Development

School Principals establish the specific guidelines for professional development in Florida. However, there are a few statewide rules that each principal must abide by that are outlined in the Florida Professional Outline Evaluation Protocol. Florida aims analyze student achievement and link this achievement to the quality of teachers. With their system of professional development, Florida hopes to enhance the department of education as a whole.

Teachers become vested into the state retirement system after 6 years of service. The average age of retirement is 62 with about 10 years of service.
