State Teaching Job Initiatives

The Delaware Department of Education has always had a strong student performance, and continues to maintain their reputation by hiring highly qualified teachers. The state also maintains a website called Teach Delaware which helps current and future teachers look at job listings and matches applicants with recruiters. Although Delaware does not have as severe shortages compared to other states, they are constantly looking for more qualified teachers.

Salary & Incentives

Delaware ranked 12th in the nation for teacher pay in 2007, with an average salary of $54,537. Compensation for teachers has continued to rise in Delaware, as the average annual base salary for 2009 was $66,294, with an annual salary range of $46,682-$88,576. The average salary for a starting teacher with a bachelor’s degree is $32,699. For a starting teacher with a masters degree, the average salary is $39,363. For a starting teacher with a PhD, the average salary is $44,223.

Professional Development

Delaware’s Professional Development Program’s mission is to promote excellence in both the educators and the students though these programs. Every five years, a teacher in Delaware must complete 90 hours of Professional Development credits as well as whatever requirements the specified school district requires. Benefits & Retirement

Teachers become vested in the state retirement system after five years of service. The average age of retirement for teachers in Delaware is 62 with about 10 years of service. Although Delaware does not have a specific retirement system for teachers, they do have a retirement system for all public employees.
