State Teaching Job Initiatives

The Connecticut State Department of Education maintains their website to assist current and future teachers with any questions or concerns they have about the state’s education program. Connecticut also has CTREAP which has job listings and offerings, school information, and other useful tips. Because Connecticut invests so much money in their educational system, the competition is tough, and teachers with higher education may set themselves apart.

Salary & Incentives

In 2007, Connecticut ranked 2nd in the nation for teacher pay with an average salary of $61,039. Compensation for Connecticut teaching jobs has continued to rise, with the average annual base salary for teachers in 2009 at $80,926, with an annual salary range of $32,833 – $98,833.  Connecticut follows a salary schedule for teachers that increases pay according to years of teaching experience, and college degree level.

Professional Development

In the past few years, Connecticut has transformed their professional development program to integrate evaluation and development into a single program. Teachers must complete 9 Continuing Education Units (CEUs) every five years to maintain their certification. Each credit amounts to 10 hours, so a teacher must complete 90 hours of CEUs. To learn more about professional development, check out Connecticut’s Professional Development Page or Connecticut’s CEU Requirements.

Benefits & Retirement

Teachers are vested into the state retirement system after 10 years of service. The average age for retirement is 60, with about 20 years of service. Connecticut maintains a program called Teachers Retirement Board (TRB) which administers the state retirement program and aims to provide teachers with the best possible pension benefits. Connecticut also offers very good benefits, which are left to discretion of school district.
