One of Our Favorite Fictional Teachers: Dewey Finn

Okay, so maybe Jack Black’s Dewey Finn in School of Rock isn’t the traditional model of good teaching. Maybe he does con his way into a substitute-teaching job and neglect to teach anything from the school’s curriculum. But hey, nobody can say they wouldn’t be thrilled if this guy showed up one Monday morning and shook things up a bit. Having recently failed at a musical career, Dewey Finn takes the opportunity to assemble a gimmicky student band with his elementary school students to enter into a Battle of the Bands to win the cash prize.

Throughout the movie, Dewey attempts to persuade the stuffy principle of the private school that he is the real deal. Though he isn’t, he does provide an entertaining look at the more exciting aspects of elementary education, and fosters a relationship with his students that teach them both something in the end. He does succeed in helping the students enjoy school, and gives them an opportunity to perform not at all common in day-to-day school life.
